Pole Dancing To Become An Olympic Sport?? Come On, Now, Quit Playin'!!

Okay. This is a joke, right? Who in their right mind would try to make pole dancing an Olympic sport? A good, new twist on getting in shape, okay, but an OLYMPIC SPORT?
Somebody has had one drink too many at the bar!!

But, guess what, folks? Someone, in fact, a few someones are actually trying to see pole dancing make its official debut at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Well, of course Brazil! Half naked seduction is already a sport there, so yeah, I can see it. Where else would it make sense? ;)

Seriously, though, there is a petition with 4000 signatures on it already to get this, ahem, sport onto the Olympic games roster. And they're working really, really hard on it!

According to The Associated Press:

KT Coates, a prominent pole dancer in England and director of Vertical Dance, is leading the Olympic push.

Says, KT:
"After a great deal of feedback from the pole-dance community, many of us have decided that it’s about time pole fitness is recognized as a competitive sport, and what better way for recognition than to be part of the 2012 Olympics held in London," she said in a petition she’s preparing for organizers of the London Olympics.
Coates added that the prospective sport "has the wow factor."

Well, she'll get no argument there!

"It’s just a matter of time before pole dancing gets Olympic recognition," says Ania Przeplasko of Hong Kong, founder of the International Pole Dancing Fitness Association.

"There will be a day when the Olympics see pole dancing as a sport," she told The Associated Press. "The Olympic community needs to acknowledge the number of people doing pole fitness now."

Well, dust off your bar stools, people!! We just might get us some pole dancing soon at them there Olympics. Aren't you just too excited? (and I know some of you actually are... ya pervs! ;) )

I personally doubt that this endeavor of theirs is going to make it all the way through to the podium. While I know that pole dancing has now gained a ton of respect since it's become a popular workout and way of staying in shape, I really don't want to tune in to see a bunch of of men swinging and spreading their legs on a pole. Oh, yeah, it's the men too, not just the women. Still wanna see it? ;)

Let's just keep an eye on these proceedings, because in this crazy world, you just never know. And if pole dancing actually does make it in, then I seriously predict that tassel twirling will be next! Synchronized! ;)

I highly doubt that. They can petition and all but Olympics is generally kid friendly. I'd like to see what's the public reaction though :P

I wonder how they'd score it? Degrees of difficulty?

Isn't there some rule where the host country gets to allow 2 new "sports" for exhibition and possible future inclusion?

LOL - I don't think it'll make it to either, but hey as you said you never know right?

My gosh. the viewing would go through the roof.

plin February 26, 2010 at 2:15 PM

synchronize pole dancing. Now that would be something. =)

The Fitness Diva February 26, 2010 at 2:23 PM

You know what, plin, that is actually an interesting idea! hmmmmmmm.....

Maybe you should join the petition and write that suggestion in! ;)

I hate to say it, but it might be the most watched and boost ratings. Trust me - I don't like it, but I wonder...

Man, this really must have pushed a button for me because I am ticked off about it! As one of the other commenters mentioned, the Olympics are kid-friendly, and pole dancing just sends out the wrong kind of message to young girls. There's too much sex (not to mention violence) out there right now for young eyes to see. Honestly, I'm all for "real life," but let children get some sort of sense of their own identity and self-worth before exposing them to the seamier aspects of it.

BTW, where did you get that hilarious clip of the cat with the balloon on the left hand side of your home page. It cracks me up every time I see it. I actually have a cat blog on EC (Sparkle - you probably see her on your drop-ins a lot), so I can't see anything cat-oriented without stopping to check it out.

If this happens, the Olympics may never be the same. lol

Not only is this a great idea, would definitely help in the TV ratings. I would personally be involved and perhaps become one of the many male trainers that would be lined up to volunteer ;-)

The Fitness Diva February 27, 2010 at 10:16 PM

Glenn, that's going to be a pretty damn long line!

And, yes, these games will break ratings records. People are drawn to anything even slightly sleazy and salacious! Whether they like it or not! ;)

I hope this doesn't go through, because to me it's just ridiculous.
Let's just see, though, huh?

But, just speculating, which country do you think will bring the most competition? hmmmmmmm...
Now THAT's something to ponder! ;)

David Funk February 27, 2010 at 11:51 PM

Yeah, Synchronized Pole Dancing would be funny.

I was just thinking which country would bring the most medals in pole dancing. This just opens the door for other crazy ideas for the Olympics if that goes through which won't happen.

I don't see it happening, but I would want Synchronized blog posting to be an event at the Winter Olympics. They should invite the best in the world to Russia. Then they can make it a contact sport! LOL!

I don't see this happening, but this is funny to see this even becoming a thought.

Take care!

If the Fitness Diva represents the USA, I'll sign the petition :) There is no way anything remotely close to pole dancing would ever become an Olympic sport. It would upset to many dangerous religious fanatics.

The cat and the balloon are mesmerizing, I could watch that a million times,.. too funny.

What!???? Pole dancing as a sports in Olympics? NO WAY! Tsk!

:/

What garbage, what are these idiots thinking. This isn't a sport, it's degrading and totally inappropriate. I would hope if this get's any momentum people would boycott the Olympics both with traveling there and on their TV's. Disgusting on sooooooooo many levels.

If that's a sport, I'd like to see the fight to be a judge for this.

Even who ever said it knows it won't ever happen but it was very clever to make the pole dancing popular, well done.

Those pics you have in the right sidebar keep cracking me up. This week's, with the granny lighting her cig on the birthday candles, is great!

Hope all is well.

How is this a sport? Do they actually have competitions? Would it become a gymnastics event or a separate event?

Brazil seems like the best time to introduce it that's forsure.
