Bad Manners at the Gym - Stop It!

Hey, lady sitting on the exercise machine yakking away on your cell phone while other people are waiting...move!

You've seen it time and time again, people in the gym just walking around in their own little worlds. The "it's all about me" population. They stay on machines longer than the alotted time during peak hours, leave equipment sweaty and greasy with their sweat and hair products, and, oh no, can't be bothered to wipe it off after they use it, the ones who monopolize two machines at once by keeping a towel on both, and let's not forget the people jumping ahead on the circuit and picking the machine you are supposed to go on next out of turn....the list goes on and on.

In the exercise studio, it's the ones who dont want to share space by moving over, answer their cell phones while class is in session, and those who think it's okay to leave the weights, mats and equipment they just used out on the floor for someone else to put away, even though they know exactly where it's supposed to go and where they got it from. Oh, and the ones that think a particular spot on the floor in the aerobics/toning class has their name on it - and don't you DARE stand there. "This has been MY SPOT for YEARs!" Uh...yeah.

Hey... whatever happened to MANNERS???

And why, oh why, didn't your mama teach you better than this??? One can only wonder!!

Manners are not a common thing anymore. Not only in the gym, but on the road, in the store, etc. Drives me nuts.

BTW, please contact me about your book. I downloaded a copy, but am having a prob with it.

Thnx

I agree...I wonder sometimes what makes people think it is all about them!!!

I let it go and do my own thing...

Hi,
Great blog post! This is one area that no one talks about and it sometimes makes me never want to comeback to that place.

I have been on the waiting end of that scenario you described with someone hogging an exercise machine and cutting into my gym time. Going at non peak hours is better. At these hours you usually find courteous people.

This is probably one of the most important reasons for my not going to the gym. Wasting time when you 're ready to work out is so annoying:)

Its true. mainly because you loose concentration over what you are doing.

Diva... I'm liking the new looks of the site. Classy.

This used to be a massive problem at this old gym I was at, it was like the survival of the fittest in there. If you didn't step up, you'd be waiting hours to work your shit. You had to literally be on people's asses about things... crazy.

Then I switched gyms... it's still just as up class yet people don't leave leftovers. It's weird, yet awesome... all bundled up at the same time.

So, hey, could be your gym. ;)

Oh, you just reminded me of what happened at the gym I worked out at yesterday.

The ones that take up multiple machines at once is a big problem where I work out at.

Then as soon as I was leaving from the gym yesterday, a woman nearly drove her car into another car as I was walking out. The woman was on her cell phone, and wasn't going to let me cross over to get to my car.

It's amazing, but yet, somewhat amusing how bad the manners of some people are.

Nice post my friend!

That is very true. I personally step away from the machines if I have an important call. If you want to get back again you would just have to wait your turn!

Having joined the gym in good faith a few months ago find myself getting abuse from the other members. A few rough types in there, very aggressive. Today received threats, I'm thinking it's body-building drugs makes them behave this way.

The reception staff seem disinterested and unhappy in their jobs. I know the fees are low for students but the standards of behaviour there and language are hard to bear.

The students in the main college seem made to feel unwelcome there. If students are to be subjected to such abuse from random groups of foul-mouth people from outside the university students should be warned before joining. I was shocked at the way people behave there.

I feel intimidated and unwelcome there and am interested in other people's experiences..

You can find them everywhere. Don't be surprise if you encounter those kind more than once a day. Manners is something that cannot be bought.

Congrats Diva! A Gym...what's a Gym? Haven't been to one in awhile, unless you count physical therapy. Anywhoo, let's continue, the DRCing!

Peace.

Ha! This kinda made me laugh, but only because I can totally relate!!! People at the gym can be sooo obnoxious and the lack of respect for time and cleanliness drives me crazy!! I have been on a treadmill before with a lady next to me conducting a business meeting of sorts on bluetooth while jogging! Just nuts!

Hi,

Not only in Gym we can see this at every where. I don't know why these people behave like this. I think they have forgotten about the word "Manners".When will they knew that we should keep our place clean and safe? If we keep that is the great help for others and that makes the good impression to them from the others.

It is really said that the world has become a place of "I don't care" people.
It's just multitasking, I guess.

Lee February 1, 2010 at 11:56 AM

Yeah, I really hate this, because I don't have an iPod or anything with me to drown out the sound of them talking. It can spoil my gym time!

Thanks for the post - I totally agree! I especially dislike the people who apparently start to meditate between sets not seeing that others are waiting in line for minutes ...

Cherilynn February 2, 2010 at 3:55 PM

Thanks. I'm glad someone said something. People can be disgusting and rude. Personally, I just work out at home.

Don't forget power lifters that chalk up entire areas marked 'no chalk' before huffing and puffing and distracting everyone with extra loud grunting.

My main problem is with groups of 4 that sit on the same machine talking instead of lifting, we 5 minute rest sets.

Good article, I totally relate.

This is not always happen at my place but it's totally unacceptable manner especially in public gym.

Weight Loss February 5, 2010 at 3:46 PM

I run into the same issue with these muscle heads that want to argue with each other over who has the best routine. I would rather spend my 20 minutes in the gym in peace and quiet. No wonder so many people end up working out in their basements.

if people can not live without cell phone?

Steven Ponec February 8, 2010 at 9:34 PM

I have definitely had this happen to me while at the gym. One time I wanted to use the leg press machine. I patiently waited for this woman to be done. She got up to get a drink, so I removed her weights and started doing leg presses. She came back over and said "I wasn't done!" so I reluctantly gave it back to her.It turns out she spent the next half hour on that machines!

People - don't hog the machines. Please. You would hate it if people did it to you.

Thank you for sharing such valuable information! So true I hate when people are talking on their phones at the gym.

andrew February 11, 2010 at 4:41 PM

Nice read Diva. Totally agree with you. Also can't stand the small groups blocking the machines while babbling.

James February 13, 2010 at 7:31 PM

I hate the guys who do curls in squat racks. That has to be one of the most annoying things to witness in a gym, especially when they have EZ curl bars sitting around! Why do you have to grab the olympic bar and hog the squat rack?

i keep my cell at silent mode or in the bag while workout. But sometimes i have a bad habit of doing tp with frds in gym and i think i should get more serious for fitness

Often I've seen people put their shoes on treadmills as soon as they walk into the gym before they get changed in order to reserve them. In a smaller gym this is an issue especially as a lot of students like myself head to the gym at the same time. First come first serve and always follow the time restrictions on cardio equipment. I've never had problems with cell phones holding up my workout at the gym before though, however I did once witness a girl answer her phone and keep running beside me. Humorous to see someone talk so easily on the phone and run while I struggle and gasp for air in order to finish a 5km.
